The first wave of freaky movie theaters began popping up around the country in the late 1990s.
They are now more prevalent in major cities than they were a decade ago.
But it wasn’t always that way.
The first freaky theaters opened in Los Angeles in the early 2000s.
But by 2004, the number of movie theaters had ballooned to more than 10,000.
There were about 1,000 in Austin in 2005.
By 2009, the numbers had balloonated to 10,500.
But that’s when a rash of new movie theaters opened.
In recent years, many freaky film theaters have closed.
In 2016, the Austin City Council voted to shut down the oldest one, in the Austin Theater.
But not everyone thinks the movie theaters are dead.
A number of critics have written that these theaters, which are often frequented by teenagers and young adults, can be a great place to experience scary movies.
I like to go and see scary movies in the middle of the day.
I’m going to do my own research, read books, talk to people, just chill.
And that’s the kind of movie I like.
The last freaky theater in the country was shuttered in 2006.
It was located on South Lamar Street, which is home to the former Alamo Drafthouse.
A year later, the former Drafthouses location was moved to the Austin Convention Center, which sits next door.
And then, in 2019, a new movie theater opened in a strip mall near the Alamo.
The space was empty, but the owner of the building, George Zabrocki, was so excited he opened a second location.
The new location, which opened in 2019 in a former Kroger store, was packed with families and teens.
In 2018, the movie theater in South Lamar, where the Drafthurts movie theater once stood, was razed to make way for a $20 million mixed-use development.
I have friends who live across the street from me.
They call it their freaky corner.
I know them all.
They go out, they watch the movies.
They talk about it.
And then I go over there and I tell them, You guys, I’m watching a movie.
And they’re like, Oh, wow, we’re watching freaky.
And I’m like, That’s the coolest thing.
When I first came to Austin, I thought the freaky thing was happening all over Austin.
I would walk up and down South Lamar.
I’d see people on the street.
I wouldn’t be able to see anything on the other side of town, I just thought, Oh.
Then I started to notice these freaky things in the movies, and I just realized, Oh my god, there’s freaky everywhere.
I started thinking, This is really happening.
So, I started talking to people.
People started asking questions.
I got more and more curious.
Eventually, I realized I was seeing a lot of freaks.
And so, I stopped going to freaky places and I started going to the places that I was able to go to because I knew they were freaky, and the people who are there were freaks, too.
So, I had a good time doing it.
This past weekend, I went to the South Lamar movie theater and it was packed.
People were in line.
There was no wait time.
I was just hanging out and watching movies, like, How could this be happening?
And then a couple of people came out.
I didn’t know them.
I don’t know why they were there.
I just kind of smiled and they looked at me and said, Hey, you’re freaky too.
They didn’t look like freaks to me.
I mean, I wasn’t that freaky as a teenager.
They were like, You are freaky?
And I said, I am freaky!
I didn’t feel scared, but I was like, I don, you know, you can’t just sit in your room, because there’s people around you, and you have to go somewhere.
I wanted to go see something scary, something scary.
I went back to the Draffthurts and they were packed, too, so I had to walk back to my room and get ready to watch a movie and then they opened the doors and they let me in.
So it’s just like a little bit of both.
There was one other movie theater that I saw in Austin that opened in 2017, but it was closed down because of Hurricane Harvey.
It’s now on fire and the owner said he has no money.
It is now one of the most dangerous movie theaters in the world, with over a dozen fatalities a year.
It has a lot to do with the people in it.
It seems like every time there’s a
